When it comes to cyclists, there are two categories: those who say, „Let’s ride our bikes to the park,” and the more adventurous ones who propose a trip all the way to Portugal, provided your legs are up to the challenge. If you belong to the second category, you’ve likely already discovered that Europe is a massive playground for cyclists.
A journey on two wheels across Europe is about much more than just the kilometers covered. In a single week, you can drink coffee in Italy, admire the Alps in Switzerland, get lost in the narrow streets of Austria, and end the day with a hearty portion of goulash in Hungary. The only constant is the bike… and the hope that the next hill will be the last—though, usually, it isn’t.
However, any experienced cyclist knows that gear must be chosen carefully. If you pack too much, every climb becomes a lesson in gravity. If you pack too little, you’ll regret it on the first chilly morning. That’s why the right gear makes the difference between a memorable adventure and a day spent wondering why you didn’t just opt for a city break by plane.
Essential items include long sleeve cycling jersey specially designed for cycling, ideal for those who want to look good even after pedaling for tens of kilometers. Technical fabrics wick away sweat, dry quickly, and offer freedom of movement, while the modern design allows you to step into a stylish café with confidence, without looking like you’ve just ridden in the Tour de France.
On hot days, bike shorts become every adventurer’s best friend. The comfort provided by stretchy, breathable fabrics is hard to beat, especially when you spend hours in the saddle. Plus, well-placed pockets are perfect for snacks, your phone, or that chocolate bar you swore you’d save for emergencies, but which disappears at the very first stop.
And don’t forget that the weather in Europe has a sense of humor of its own. You might set off in 28-degree heat in the morning, only to be met by a cold wind or a torrential downpour in the afternoon. That is precisely why cycling hoodies are indispensable. Lightweight, compact, and wind-resistant, they take up little space in your luggage and provide comfort when the temperature decides to put your optimism to the test.
Along the way, you will meet people from all corners of the globe. Some will recommend the best route, others the tastiest bakery, and a few will try to convince you that there are only five kilometers left to your destination. Never believe them without checking the map. 🙂
But the beauty of a bicycle trip lies in the fact that no one is rushing you. You have time to photograph the lavender fields of France, the windmills of the Netherlands, or the impressive castles of Germany. Every stop becomes a story, and every climb, no matter how difficult is rewarded with spectacular scenery and the feeling of having achieved a small personal victory.
And in the end, it doesn’t matter how many pairs of mtb shorts did you go through on the trail, how many kilometers you’ve covered or how many countries you’ve ticked off on the map. What matters are the smiles, the memories, and the stories you’ll tell your friends.
Would you go on a bicycle trip across Europe?
